Oct 6th 1966: BAND CHARITY CONCERT – A large audience in the Esplanade Pavilion on Sunday evening listened appreciatively to the final concert this season of Ryde Borough Band. Parkhurst Prison Officers Male Voice Choir also rendered several items. Proceeds of the concert, which grossed over £28, are being donated to Ryde Ambulance Division, the St. John Ambulance Brigade.
Oct 6th 1966: T.T. CLUB – Ryde Table Tennis Club held their annual meeting at the Vectis Hall on Friday. The club has entered four teams in the Island League this season. Mr. D. FREDERICKS, hon. secretary, congratulated Tim DOUGLAS on winning the Consolation Singles Cup in the Island Closed Championships last year.
Oct 6th 1966: WOMEN’S GAS FEDERATION – Holding their monthly meeting on Monday at the Southern Gas Board showrooms, High Street, the Federation saw a dress show staged by Dorothy Perkins Ltd. The demonstrators were thanked by Mrs. G. J. EVANS.
Oct 6th 1966: FIRM’S OUTING – Employees of Columbia Products went on the firm’s first outing on Saturday. They enjoyed a river trip from Westminster to Kew Gardens, and a pleasant afternoon at Hampton Court. The management contributed towards the expenses.
Oct 6th 1966: MILK SHAKE (UP) – When the milk van he was driving overturned on Friday at Quarr Hill, Mr. Brian DOWNER, of Highfield Road, was unhurt. The vehicle was later righted and driven off.
Oct 13th 1966: OVERTURNED – A Britten-Norman CC5 Cushion-craft on Ministry of Aviation trials overturned off Seaview yesterday morning. The two people on board, test pilot Alan TRIPP and a technical observer, were picked up by the firm’s motor-boat which was on hand in case of such an accident.
Oct 13th 1966: LIBRARY – When Ryde Public Library began a new chapter in its history last October, moving premises to the former School of Art in George Street, this proved a great boost to the readership. In the six months following the opening by the Island Governor, Earl MOUNTBATTEN, issues increased by 27%. Now, half as many books again are being issued from the new premises than from the old.
Oct 13th 1966: WOMEN’S INSTITUTE – Haylands, “Down to the sea in ships and behold the wonder of the sea,” was the title of a talk given last Wednesday by Mr. WELLS of Mac-Fisheries Ltd., and he illustrated it with a display of every variety of fish. During the talk he told the ladies how to recognise if fish was fresh, and how to prepare it for cooking.
Oct 13th 1966: HUT TENANTS’ – Holders of day huts at Quay Road have petitioned Ryde Borough Council, to the effect that they understood the Council intended to remove the huts to enable a larger car park to be provided. The Council decided to tell petitioners that the reorganisation of traffic arrangements on the sea front provided for the removal of the huts, but they would remain at least for the 1967 summer season.
Oct 13th 1966: NOT RUBBISH? – Pork pies, rotten fish and a dead cat were some of the items deposited on the Town Depot tip in Rink Road, and it has roused the ire of residents in the vicinity. The committee re-affirmed their intention that the tip was provided solely for residents to dispose of large articles of domestic rubbish, such as old bedsteads and mattresses.
Oct 13th 1966: ANNIE’S TEAM GOT THEIR GUNS – Led by Sergeant Annie BRIDLE, the .22 rifle experts of the Girls Venture Corps (No. 1529) Ryde Wing challenged the No. 1024 (I.W.) Squadron Air Training Corps ‘A’ Flight to a match at the A.T.C. Headquarters, Newport Street. They scored 328 points out of a possible 375 to beat the boys by seven points. Looking on proudly was their senior officer, Captain D. GRUNDY, whose husband, Warrant Officer R. J. GRUNDY, coached both teams.
