Our busy Research Team, led by Ann Barrett, added detail to 65 of the records on the website in April 2009.

Our busy Research Team, led by Ann Barrett, added detail to 65 of the records on the website in April 2009. There would have been more but the website was closed for maintenance for a few days at the end of April.

Examples of this month’s additions include information about: the death of Sir James Lilyman Caldwell GCB in July 1863; the death of Mr Edward Carter of East Upton a Senior County Magistrate and major land owner in Ryde in May 1931; the death of Mr Samuel Curtis, a reporter for the IW Observer in August 1873; the wedding of Miss Catherine Rose Fallick to Mr Ambrose Coghlan in August 1903; a report of a meeting between Mr Vivian Webber, Mr Arthur Fowles and HRH the Prince of Wales in August 1876; the report of the wreck of the torpedo boat destroyer Cobra in 1901; the erection of a monument on the grave of Robert Milligan, a Waterloo hero, in Ryde Cemetery in 1875; report of the funeral of Major-General Sir John Ramsey Slade, KCB, Colonel Commanding RA and Gentleman Usher to the King in September 1913; the death notice of Henry Smith a retired Lifeboatman in April 1939; plus much more.
