March 2010 Additions to records

In March 2010 our research team added detail to a further 20 records on the website.

In March 2010 our research team lead by Ann Barrett added details to 20 more records on our website.

This month’s additions include information from census, births, deaths & marriages as well as from commercial directories and also include:

* Photograph of a Newsagent’s shop in the High Street belonging to Henry and Mary Brown in the early 1900s and detail of the tragic death of Mrs Brown as the result of a fall in 1921.

* Obituary for Mr Ernest Chandler who died in June 1940, he was the proprietor of a building and decorating business in Anglesea Street, Ryde.

* Details of a motor car accident in July 1921 resulting in the death of Mr Fred Draper of Surrey Street, Ryde.

* Details of the death of Emily Godlsmith at the young age of 21 in March 1940. She had been an attendant at the Scala Cinema.

* Death of Mr John Meader in March 1895, he was builder and made many of the streets in the town including Monkton Street, Melville Street, Upper West Street, Green Street and Argyll Street. He also constructed a large portion of the Esplanade.

* Death of retired actress, Nellie Sheffield in October 1921.
