Restoration of St Paul's Chapel
Restoration of St Paul's Chapel

The IW Council has successfully completed a £450,000 Heritage Lottery funded project to restore Ryde Cemetery.

On Friday 10 and Saturday 11 September we will be celebrating the successful completion of the Restoration Project by hosting two open days as part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme.

The project has restored all three chapels in the cemetery and the North Chapel in the centre of the cemetery has been made into a Heritage and Learning Resource Centre; the central driveway has been resurfaced from the West Street gate up to and around the central chapels; the West Street gates have been replaced with new wooden gates; the boundary at the Pellhurst Road end of the cemetery has been repaired and new railings and gates installed; a toilet with disabled access has been created in The Bothey; 5 of the significant graves have been repaired and restored; new sign boards and litter bins have been installed and a new Ryde Cemetery Heritage Trail created.

The work has taken several years and we congratulate the IW Council on its successful completion. The project has taken what was a sad and neglected looking cemetery and created a vibrant space and facilities that will be of benefit to the whole of the community.
