No Marriage!

There is an old story to the effect that a couple attended a rural church to be made one. Just before commencing the marriage ceremony, however the parson noticed that the bridegroom had been imbibing too freely, and he declined to proceed with the ceremony. After soundly rating the bridegroom for his misconduct, he turned to the bride and said “And you too ought to be ashamed of yourself to come here with a man in such a disgusting state.” “Please sir,” said the tearful bride, “I can’t get him to come when he’s sober.”

A similar affair is said to have occurred a few days ago in a church not far from Ryde. The clergyman refused to perform the ceremony, but in this case the bride was so indignant at the affront put upon her, that she left the bridegroom in church, and engagement is “off.”
