Studio Portrait of the Hollis Children

Hollis Children
Hollis Children

Ann and Kate have recently been helping a Ryde lady with research into her Hollis/Dyer family.

This lovely portrait of the Hollis children was taken in Arthur Debenham’s Ryde studio in 1899.

The little boy, George, was born in 1895 and his big sister Nellie was two years older. Their parents were William Isaac and Ellen Hollis who first lived at Chatfield House in Dover Street, managing it as a Lodging House. They later moved to Ophir House in Belvidere Street.

George enlisted with the Royal Engineers in 1914 and was killed in action in France on March 24, 1918.

Nellie went on to marry Gordon Dyer , had three children and remained living at Ophir House.
