Suffolk Towers, George Street, Ryde

SUFFOLK HOUSE/TOWERS

Suffolk House, George Street (next to the Baptist Church), this very ornate property was built in the late 1830’s for the Rev. T. S. Guyer, who was Minister of the Congregational Church in Ryde, from 1817 to 1846.

More about Rev. T. S. Guyer here

In the late 1840’s it became the home of George Fellow Harrington, JP., dentist and inventor.   About 20 years later in the 1860’s  it was owned by John Mortimer Lousada, who transformed it into Suffolk Towers by adding towers, balustrades and many other features in the Italian style.  The property still retains the curved windows to this day. It has had many occupiers and uses.

The house attracts much interest, and has been researched by many people over the years, so more can be read here from research carried out by Anthony J. Merry.
