Walking Festival May 2024

WALKING FESTIVAL

The weather was very kind to us on Tuesday 14th May, when we welcomed 14 people who had booked their walk around the Ryde Cemetery. A great deal of organisation was involved, but it was  worthwhile, to make it a very pleasant and successful event for all concerned.

The guest walkers began their tour in the St Paul’s Chapel, hearing about the history from when it was used as a chapel and then became a mortuary, The people were then taken to see various graves of interesting former residents of Ryde, and given a short summary of their lives, work and pastimes.

At the end of the walk, they were told the history of the Twin Chapels.  The tour culminated in the North Chapel when the guests were able to partake of tea, coffee and home-made cakes. Some were interested in the archives and the work of the group, and expressed thanks for the groups effort to make the morning a good one.

I really enjoyed the day and felt privileged to do my bit by relating the history. My grateful thanks to others that helped on the day, Margaret who led the walk around the graves with Wendy as back-marker.  Thank you also to those who made and donated the lovely cakes, and the volunteers that dealt with the refreshments, also, the two that manned the chapels.  It was very kind of all those who gave their time to help the event run smoothly.

I must also thank Trevor and Wendy who helped on the previous Friday to move the display boards and set-up in the chapels in advance of the event.
