Social Morning January 2025

Image from Mark Saunders collection

On Saturday 11 January, RSHG held its first Social Morning of the new year. The weather was cold but sunny, which encouraged people to come out.  40 turned up at the Baptist Church in George Street, Ryde, where we hold these gatherings. It was good to see that nine of those attending were visitors who had heard about the event from our advertising posters.

After a short welcome, members, friends and visitors enjoyed refreshments and took part in a raffle in aid of group funds.

At approximately 11am our speaker for the morning was introduced, Mark Saunders, chairman of the Shanklin and District History Society.  Mark gave us a splendid talk with illustrations, called “A Ramble Past some Abandoned Defensive Structures,” which was very interesting and enjoyed by all.  I think most of us learned a lot that we didn’t know about before.  The talk was very well received by all present, with many of the audience asking a variety of questions at the end.  There were numerous good comments from the attendees upon leaving.

We give our many thanks to Mark Saunders for helping to make our social morning a success.
