Minibeasts
We were blessed with fine dry weather for the insect walk, led by Richard Smout. around 18 people took part. Richard explained that ‘insects’ was a vast topic and that within the various species could be hundreds of sub species.
Join us, and Richard Smout for a leisurely walk around Ryde Cemetery on Tuesday 13 August. There are many species of Insects for you to see, which he will help you to identify.
Now that the grass has been cut in the conservation area of the cemetery it looks very different, and we can see many things that were previously hidden from view.
This summer has been perfect weather for slugs and snails, many of which live in the cemetery. Most of them seem to have migrated to the garden of The Lodge and have descimated our vegetable crops!
Visit Ryde cemetery in April and you may be surrounded by swarms of black flies slowly moving through the air with their long back legs dangling.
This is the time of year when spiders seem to be very noticeable, whether by their dewy early morning webs or the vision of them scuttling around our bedrooms and bath tubs!
