Apr 6th 1912: JEWELLERS AND THE SHOP ACT – At the meeting held on Wednesday evening those trading in Jewellry in the Town, decided to approach the Town Council with a view to getting a suspension to the early closing order during August and September.

Apr 6th 1912: WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE – There was evidently a sprinkling of sympathisers with women’s suffrage at Mr. HORSBURGH’S lecture on Tuesday. His reference to the subject of “votes for women” were met with a tapping of the feet, smiles and nods, and other evidence of feminine approbation.

Apr 6th 1912: PRESENTATION – Mrs. L. HAPGOOD who, much to the regret of the staff and the children has left Bettesworth Road Infants’ School, to take up the appointment of head mistress at the St. John’s Road Infants’ School, in succession to Miss WATSON, has been presented with a gold pendant and chain by the teachers and scholars.

Apr 6th 1912: SHORTHAND SUCCESS – Miss Ethel GIBSON, of “Alberta”, Well-street, Ryde has just been successful in securing the Teacher’s Registration Diploma of the Sloan-Duployan Shorthand Society, certifying to her ability as a shorthand teacher.

Apr 6th 1912: SEA DEFENCES – The sea defences to the eastward of Ryde are causing a good deal of trouble. In addition to the break near the Appley Watch Tower there is another break at Springvale close to the slipway.

Apr 6th 1912: EDUCATION – The Ryde Education Committee are making numerous alterations to the staffing of the schools in the town. That is the way they are able to decrease the cost of the schools without inflicting hardship on any teachers.

Apr 20th 1912: TITANIC DISASTER – The terrible disaster to the Titanic, which passed Ryde only a short while ago, brings to our notice that our own town suffers by her loss. As far as can be ascertained some six men from Ryde were employed on this ill-fated ship, those being men of the name of MOORE, WHEAT, PERKIS (Swanmore), J. WHITE, MILFORD and G. FAIRALL (Surrey-street). The telegram received on Friday morning by the friends of PERKIS stated that he is amongst those saved.

Apr 20th 1912: FANCY DRESS BALL – A very successful dance and fancy dress ball was held at the Foresters’ Hall on Thursday evening, in aid of the Binstead Football Club, there were over a hundred present. Mr. A. LININGTON was M.C. and music was provided by the band of the Ammunition Column, Royal Field Artillery, under the instructor, Sergeant HOLLAND.

Apr 20th 1912: SCHOOL CRICKET – The suggestion thrown out by a speaker at the annual meeting of the Ryde Cricket Club that a schools cricket league should be formed–is worthy of serious and friendly consideration by the club.

Apr 20th 1912: GUN CLUB – The I.W. Gun Club opened the season on Wednesday when there was a fair attendance. The day was bright and sunny, if a little cold, and the pleasant grounds at Ashey were looking their best.
