August 1860

Isle of Wight Observer

Aug 4th 1860: ADVERT – Thomas FAIREY, Victoria House, 61 Union-street, Ryde. Laceman ~ Hosier ~ Glover and Fancy Warehouseman, begs to announce that he has just received another supply of Black Spanish Mantilla’s, Spanish Squares, Half Squares, and Black Maltese Squares &c. He can confidently recommend the above goods being much below the regular price and respectfully solicits an early inspection.

Aug 4th 1860: LETTER TO THE EDITOR – Sir, instead of inhaling and enjoying the sweet and pure air of heaven and the refreshing breezes from the sea, the visitors and inhabitants near the Solent at Ryde breathe nothing now but sickening suffocating nauseous, and offensive effluvia from the Ferry Company’s gas tar works. The rooms in all the houses in that neighbourhood are filled with the horrid smell, and it ought to be immediately put a stop to, as it is impossible to remain in such a nauseous atmosphere and stench. Yours truly…Anti Malaria.. Ryde 2 Aug 1860.

Aug 11th 1860: CHILDREN’S TREAT – The children of St. Marie’s Catholic Schools had a delightful treat on Thursday given them by their noble foundress, the Countess of Clare, at Sandown, where her Ladyship is at present residing; they were conveyed thither in vans and after having been bountifully regaled, they enjoyed themselves on the lawn in front of her residence. In the evening the scene was enlivened by the band of the Ryde Volunteers which was engaged by her Ladyship for the occasion.

Aug 11th 1860: NOTICE TO THE IW FERRY CO. – The Ryde Commissioners having this day received a complaint from Mr. Joseph FRENCH owner of the barge “Una” of Fareham, that the stones placed by your direction under the wall of the town slipway, known as George-street slipway, is an interference to the free access to the said slipway, I hereby give you notice and require you forthwith to remove the said stones. dated 3rd Aug 1860. W. H. PULLEN.

Aug 18th 1860: DR. MARKS CONCERTS – On Tuesday evening the Victoria Rooms were crowded with a fashionable audience. The performers were the juvenile group of musicians, who were highly appreciated and much applauded, and their appearance in Rifle costumes added considerably to their popularity. Go so ever he will, we wish Dr. MARK and his cause the most unbounded success.

Aug 25th 1860: STEAM HORSEBOAT – The Ferry Company has now a steam horseboat plying between Ryde and Portsmouth, she is open aft but decked in forward, and steams, we should think, about five miles an hour; she has one great defect, she will not answer her helm, or not alter her course until the helm is hard up or hard down.

Aug 25th 1860: SUNDAY STEALING – Some dishonest person or persons have made it a practice the last two or three Sundays to scale the wall of C. PAYNE, Esq., of Uplands, and steal therefrom plums. A reward of £2.10s. has been offered for the detection of these thieves.

Aug 25th 1860: THE MISSES KATE & ELLEN TERRY – The young ladies whose capabilities are so well known and appreciated in Ryde, will appear at the Victoria Rooms, for one night only, on this occasion they will be assisted by Mr DALE, whose vocal capabilities we have been informed, are a very high order. It needed no other talent than their own to ensure the Misses TERRY a repetition of that success which always attend them here.

Aug 25th 1860: PRESENTATION OF SILVER BUGLES – The interesting ceremony which took place on Thursday at Ryde-House Park, had long been looked forward to as one of the “golden-letter” days in the career of the Ryde Rifle Volunteers. It was the day they were substantially to feel the “appreciation” in which the noble movement is held by the ladies of Ryde.
