Dec 12th 1907: CHRISTMAS BOXES – It seems that there is a danger even in giving Christmas boxes, for one may be hauled up under the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1906, the act will operate badly against the presenter.

Dec 12th 1907: SKATING CARNIVAL – On Thursday evening a skating carnival took place at the Pavilion. There was a large attendance of participants and spectators. Mr. BRADFIELD arranged the affair, which gave great satisfaction.

Dec 12th 1907: BOROUGH BUSINESS – Ald. SWEETMAN said that it was intended to place a wood crossing instead of a stone crossing, at the top of St. John’s-road, when the roadway became settled down.

Dec 19th 1907: DICKEN’S CHRISTMAS CAROL – On Monday evening Mr. SPEAIGHT gave a splendid recitation of “Dicken’s Christmas Carol” at the Town Hall in aid of the funds of the Ryde District Nursing Association. Mr. MAYBRICK, J.P., presided, and eulogised the work of the four nurses in connection with the Association, who paid some 800 visits every month. Dr. MANDER played a varied organ selection during the evening.

Dec 19th 1907: RYDE BOROUGH BENCH – Fredk. HOBGEN, 21, mariner, 38 Player-street was summoned with being drunk while in charge of a child 1¾ years old. He pleaded guilty and was fined 5s. and 1s. costs.

Dec 26th 1907: FRIENDLY CLUB – Melville Friendly Club balance sheet showed total receipts of £58.7s.8d., which after being divided amongst 81 members, left a balance of 5s.8d. Mr. W. E. AUSTIN is the secretary.

Dec 26th 1907: CHRISTMAS – What a year of bustle and activity it has been. The trade has increased around the country in leaps and bounds, but unfortunately watering places generally, and small towns outside manufacturing counties have not shared in the prosperity. Trade has been dull, very dull.

Dec 26th 1907: FOOTBALL – Ryde gained a couple of league points on Saturday at the expense of Bitterne Guild, whose doings in the league – they are 3rd from top – entitled them to respect.
