Dec 5th 1963: EXHIBITION – Seventeen year-old Catherine SEARLE, a member of Ryde Youth Centre, has two paintings, a portrait and a street scene, hung in the current exhibition of the National Association of Youth Clubs at the Congress Hall, Great Russell-street, London.

Dec 5th 1963: HARRIERS – Ryde Harriers monthly 4½-miles road handicap on Tuesday was another triumph for youngsters G. BAKER (jnr), D. YOUNG, and A. CASS, who finished in that order in front of the experienced Vernon DYER.

Dec 12th 1963: DUE FOR ARREST – A Ryde woman will be tangling with P.C. George DIXON— Jack WARNER of “Dixon of Dock Green”—on B.B.C. Television this Saturday. She is Miss Jean HOLNESS of “Sandringham,” The Strand. Educated at Westwing School, Miss HOLNESS underwent elocution training and has since worked in repertory.

Dec 12th 1963: CAPTURE – Within half an hour of a daring escape from Parkhurst Prison on Tuesday morning, the prisoner was recaptured at Ryde Pier Head. Police are now investigating the ownership of the getaway cars, and trying to find the men who helped the escape.

Dec 12th 1963: GROYNES – Three wooden groynes 30 ft in length so constructed to enable them to be raised or lowered in height, will be built near Cornwall-street Slipway at a cost of £132.

Dec 12th 1963: ON-THE-LEVEL – The sum of £700 has been included in the 1963-64 financial year’s programme for levelling work at Pell Lane Recreation Ground.

Dec 12th 1963: HAYLANDS W.I. – The annual meeting was held at St. Michael’s Hall on Wednesday. The members present signed a Christmas card which is being sent to the “link” in New Zealand. Tea was served by Mrs. JOY and helpers.

Dec 12th 1963: HOUSES – Building contractors behind schedule with a contract for eight houses at Binstead Estate will be told the Housing Committee is dissatisfied with progress. They will be given a time limit to January 14 to finish the job.

Dec 12th 1963: PRESENTATION – Two framed poster programmes dated 1823 and 1857, of the old Theatre Royal, which was destroyed by fire, have been presented to the corporation and will be hung in the committee room.

Dec 24th 1963: HOSPITAL – Christmas celebrations for those in hospital have been in full swing at the Royal I.W. County Hospital for weeks. Wednesday, Ryde Methodist Church Choir toured all the wards singing Christmas carols. The Assistant Matron, Miss E. WINTER organised the hospital staff party at the Social Club’s Pavilion. About 100 staff and friends attended.

Dec 24th 1963: RUNAWAY CAR – A young man, a resident of Castle-street, Ryde, risked getting injured by a runaway car, in an attempt to prevent an accident. Since he was in danger of being crushed between two cars, his father called him to jump clear. The handbrake had not been set properly. The owner from London was fined £5 by Borough Magistrates.

Dec 24th 1963: FIFTH FINE – P.C. CHIVERS said that in the course of persuading a woman to leave the Nag’s Head, and escorting her outside, she threw things at him, fell into the road and screamed and shouted. Imposing a £5 fine upon the woman for her fifth offence of drunkenness, Ald. BIRD told her “Any repetition of this sort of thing and you will not get away with a fine.”
