Jun 7th 1924:  PIGEON RACING – Mr. C. MARTIN’s pigeon won the Homing Society’s race from Newbury on Saturday.  It was released at 2.05pm and arrived at 3.24—a distance of about 50 miles.  Birds belonging to Mr. W. BRIDLE and Mr. H. DUNNING were 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Jun 7th 1924:  LOCAL REGATTA – At a public meeting it was decided to hold the annual regatta on Thursday September 4th.  The choice of site was agreed, to hold the event off the Esplanade, the tide being suitable on that day, and the children’s sports at the canoe-lake.

Jun 7th 1924:  SALVATIONISTS ANNIVERSARY – Salvation Army bands from Ryde, Newport, and Cowes took part in a massed concert at the Town-hall on Monday to mark the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the local corps.  The ensign said that during the whole of the long record of the Ryde Corps S. M. HAYLES had been actively connected with it.  Bandmaster WARREN too, had seen many years of devoted service.

Jun 7th 1924:  LOCAL FAILURE – Tuesday’s London Gazette announced a receiving order in bankruptcy in the matter of A. E. WATSON, the Picture House, and 15 Church-street, Ryde.

Jun 14th 1924:  BACK TO THE TENT – The definite refusal by the Ministry of Health to sanction the Western-esplanade pavilion scheme makes it imperative that the provision of some sort of shelter on the front should be considered at the earliest possible moment. A band has already been engaged for the summer, and the Music and Entertainments Committee are practically unanimous in asking for protection of some sort for it.

Jun 14th 1924:  ROAD IMPROVEMENTS – Tar-spraying has been actively carried on during the last month. Lind-street, Cross-street, Melville-street, the Strand, Lower George-street, Castle-street, and Swanmore-road have been treated at a cost of about £873, or about 6d. a square yard.  The new water main in Corbett-road has been completed at a cost of £147.

Jun 21st 1924:  SUNDAY EVENING CONCERTS – have been commenced at the Western-esplanade by the Town Band under Mr.; W. HOLLOWAY.  An excellent programme of operatic and classical pieces was played.

Jun 21st 1924:  PRETTY WEDDING – took place at the Parish Church on Saturday 7th inst., between Mr. Charles Henry DAISH, of Hill-street, and Miss Winifred Nellie MURSELL, eldest daughter of Mr. Arthur MURSELL, of Barfield House.  The bride’s dress was of ivory crepe de Chine, with veil and coronet of orange blossom, and she carried a shower bouquet of choice white flowers.  The reception was held at the Royal Pier Hotel, by permission of the managing director.

Jun 21st 1924:  FETE AT APPLEY HALL – In delightfully sunny weather the spacious grounds of Appley-hall, the residence of Sir Hedworth WILLIAMSON, Bart., were thronged with people from many miles around on Thursday, when a grand fete was held in connection with the St. John’s Oakfield, branch of the I.W. Conservative Association.  The approach to the hall was gaily decorated with flags, and on either side of the many charming walks stalls were arranged.

Jun 28th 1924:  RAILWAY COMPANY OUTING – Sir Herbert WALKER (general manager of the Southern Railway Co.) and a large number of his staff visited the Island on Saturday.

Jun 28th 1924:  DANGEROUS SIDEWALK – Several people having recently fallen rather heavily owing to the smooth condition of the paving at the top of Union-street, the authorities have ordered the paving to be chipped to obviate the danger.

Jun 28th 1924:  NOTICE – Highfield, Queen’s Road, Ryde. The valuable contents of this residence will be sold by Auction early in July by WALLIS, RIDDETT and Co.  Catalogues in due course.
