Mar 5th 1964: BOROUGH BAND – There is an air of optimism among members of Ryde Borough Band who are tuning up for a special engagement next month. That is to play against 18 other brass bands in London, for the Daily Herald Southern Counties Area Championship title.

Mar 5th 1964: PHOTO FINISH – With only two weeks of the season remaining, the keenest of relegation battles seen in the I.W. Table Tennis League first division for many seasons, is raging.

Mar 5th 1964: SILVER CHORDS – The members met at the Oddfellows Hall on Tuesday when a session of dancing was enjoyed, with Mr. Bill ROSS as MC and Mrs. HINDYELF, chairman, welcomed all present.

Mar 5th 1964: DARTS – A big battle remains for second place in the League Championship between The Lion, Ryde, and Sandown Tap.

Mar 12th 1964: BUSES – Is British Railways’ claim that buses cannot run down Ryde Pier when the railways close because the wind would blow them over, just hot air? Councillor BROWNSDON thinks so. If it were possible the pierhead would be the most appropriate place for a terminus.

Mar 12th 1964: DISCONTENT – Ryde’s “chairborne division” —the people who buy season tickets to use sea-front deck chairs throughout the season—will pay almost three times as much this year. Despite a plea from Ryde Bowling Club, whose Esplanade greens attract thousands of spectators every summer, the corporation agreed to increase the price of season tickets from 7s.6d. to £1.

Mar 12th 1964: HOUSING – Land fronting Pell Lane on the Binstead Estate, originally reserved for industrial purposes, will instead be used for housing purposes since enquiries for its industrial use have not matured.

Mar 12th 1964: PETITION – Fourteen residents of The Strand, Ryde, had petitioned against seasonal broadcasting of records along the sea front, with the result that the council are to consider reports on possible adjustments to the amplifying equipment.

Mar 12th 1964: FILM – Arrangements will be made to stage a series of public showings of a Royal Navy film about the “mouth to mouth” system of artificial respiration, before the bathing season gets under way.

Mar 12th 1964: NO TO FLATS – Ryde Professional and Business Men’s Association will be told that the council are not in favour of their suggestion for blocks of high-density flats in Ryde, which the association believe would attract residents to the town.

Mar 26th 1964: COCKTAILS – About 100 guests attended a cocktail party at the new offices of Messrs. J. H. SIMMONDS & Co. Ltd., bookmakers, at 68 Union-street, Ryde on Tuesday evening to celebrate the opening. Mr. S. R. LLOYD, general manager, and Mrs. LLOYD welcomed them.

Mar 26th 1964: SCIENTIFIC SOCIETY – At their meeting held at the Town Hall last Wednesday, Ryde Microscopical and Scientific Society heard an interesting lecture on Dentistry, with slides.
