May 7th 1964: FESTIVAL – With 1,595 entries, 50 more than last year, the 34th I.W. Musical Competition Festival at Ryde was in full swing at five halls. Mainland ballerinas swept the board.

May 7th 1964: CAPTURE – Early yesterday police recaptured a 24 year old prisoner who escaped from Camp Hill Prison on Tuesday afternoon. The prisoner had absconded from a working party near the Prison.

May 7th 1964: CLUB – Ryde Methodist Church Young Wives Club celebrated their third anniversary at the weekend. On Saturday, a social evening and a sale of work was opened, when £52 was raised for the Church Renovation Fund.

May 7th 1964: MAY DAY – In brilliant sunshine, large crowds enjoyed a typical English scene on Friday afternoon when Binstead C.E. School staged their annual May revels. Each year the school choose a 10 year old girl to act as May Queen, and this time the honour fell to Christine HUNNYBUN, with four attendants.

May 7th 1964: THIEVES – Leather goods, mostly purses valued at about £10, were taken by thieves who smashed two display cases of H. and D. BAILEY’s, Royal Victoria Arcade, Ryde, during Monday night. Police were puzzled by the fact that other display cases containing more valuable goods were ignored.

May 21st 1964: TROPHIES – Seventy-nine trophies. That is how many awards the Ryde and District Snooker, Cribbage and Darts League were presented at their annual dinner held at the Royal York Hotel on Thursday. This was remarkable in itself, for the league has 180 registered members competing for honours. 100 members and friends attended the dinner. Harry ROSS league president.

May 21st 1964: W.I. BINSTEAD – The meeting was held at the Methodist Schoolroom last Wednesday. There was a good attendance. Mrs. HUMPHREYS gave a demonstration on the “Art of Make-up” and was followed by a competition for “the prettiest pair of ankles.”

May 21st 1964: HOVERCRAFT – Problems over the availability of the SRN2 have resulted in the hovercraft passenger service which was scheduled to operate between Ryde and Southsea from June 8, being delayed. Instead the service will not start until June 17.

May 21st 1964: MYSTERY SOLDIER – Who is the soldier whose photograph is displayed in YOUNG’s Radio Shop, High-street? It was taken by a Chale photographer from a screen showing the BBC television programme, “South Today” recently. All the photographer can remember is that the soldier comes from Ryde and is serving in Cyprus. We hope the family will tell us who he is.

May 21st 1964: 50 YEARS BUSINESS – W. TEAGUE and Co. Ltd., celebrated its jubilee on Tuesday evening. It was exactly 50 years before, on May 19, 1914, that “The Island music shop,” as it is known, came into operation as a private company, having taken over the Union-street business from the executors of the late Mr. William TEAGUE.

May 21st 1964: ACTOR’S DEBUT – A 13 year old boy making his first stage appearance, stole the show when the Bellevue Players presented “The Winslow Boy” at the Esplanade Pavilion. Andrew BULL of Barfield Lodge was invited by the Players to take the title role. His mother Hazel, is a member of the company.
