RYDE LIBRARY EXHIBITION – RYDE’S MARITIME PAST

Wreck of the Royal George

In February we had our first exhibition of the year at Ryde Library. It was based on the group’s research into Ryde’s maritime past, an important part of our history as a coastal town.

The exhibition included information about Arthur Wellington Fowles the marine artist, Captain James Stallard a resident of Ryde who for many years made his living by smuggling, Charles Dore Harvey a Trinity House pilot who survived the wreck of the Deutschland in 1875, Albert Jones from Ryde who was killed on HMS Bulwark in November 1914. information about the sinking of the Royal George in 1782 and about HMS Sirius and the sailing of the first fleet to Australia in 1787 and much more.

The exhibition was in the library for a month and proved to be very popular.
