HERITAGE OPEN DAYS IN RYDE CEMETERY 2010

The successful completion of the Ryde Cemetery Restoration project and the official opening of the Heritage and Learning Centre in Ryde Cemetery took place on Thursday 9 September 2010.

The successful completion of the Ryde Cemetery Restoration project and the official opening of the Heritage and Learning Centre in Ryde Cemetery took place on Thursday 9 September 2010.

On Friday 10 and Saturday 11 September Ryde Social Heritage Group hosted two Heritage Open Days in Ryde Cemetery as part of the National Heritage Open Days scheme. The open days were a collaboration between RSHG, Bereavement Services and the Friends of Ryde Cemetery.

Over the course of the three days well over 1000 people visited the Cemetery.

All three chapels in the cemetery were used for the event. The chapel on West Street included displays of school work and training undertaken during the course of the project.

The South of the two central chapels contained displays by Bereavement Services and the Friends of Ryde Cemetery. The North chapel had a RSHG display on the Cemetery Heritage Trail which was specially written for the project and we had volunteers on hand throughout the two days to demonstrate using the RSHG website.

Copies of the newly produced booklet on the Cemetery Heritage Trail were given away to visitors over the weekend and are now available for a small donation to anyone wanting a copy.

Ryde Social Heritage Group also gave guided tours of the cemetery throughout Heritage Open Days.
