Ann Lead Researcher
Ann Lead Researcher

In May Ann carried out lots of research into Probate and wills and that forms much of the detail of the month’s additions, but you will also find:

* The wonderful story of an eccentric Ryde character, Mr Harry Withington, a shop keeper who died in January 1899. Originally from Lancashire he had spent an adventurous youth in America in the Californian gold fields.

* Obituary to Mr William Wearn, who died in Feburary 1953. Mr Wearn had been the headmaster of the Ryde Central school for 16 years until his retirement in 1940.

* Obituary to Mr William Thirkell who died in December 1935 and who had twice been Mayor of Ryde.

* Report of the death of Leuit. Col. Leonard Lewer in February 1969. He had served in four wars and was also Mayor of Ryde for two years.

* Funeral report of Mr William Jessop, vice-commodore of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club who died in July 1885 and left a fortune of almost £150,000.
