OCTOBER 2012 ADDITIONS TO RECORDS

In October our Research Team, led by Ann Barrett, added biographical detail to 34 records on the website.

Various archives have been searched and in this month’s additions you will find:

* Report of the deaths of William Acres a military veteran in May 1914. Corpl Acres had lived in Ryde for over 50 years having previously fought in the Crimean War and Indian Mutiny, holding medals and clasps for both campaigns.

* A short biography of Capt Arthur Newton in November 1962. Capt Newton was a well known judge at Island gymkhanas, he was president of the Ryde British Legion and hon secretary of the Royal IW Agricultural Society. He was also chairman and hon secretary of the British Association of the Swiss Alpine Club.

* Report of the death of Mr Sydney Bishop in June 1928, he was the founder of a long established wine and spirit business in Union Street.

* The police service record of George Gatrell a Sergeant in the Metropolitan Police who died at the young age of 31 years in 1907.
