Hannah Wood 1766 – 1863

Hannah Wood's grave in Ryde Cemetery

In January 1863 Hannah Wood of Ryde passed away at the age of 97 years.

She was born in 1766 at White Cottage on the shore at Ryde and at the young age of 16 years she witnessed the capsizing of the ship Royal George in the Solent, a tragedy in which more than 900 people died.

She was the widow of Johnny Wood who school master at the Free School in Ryde.

When Hannah “Granny” Wood died in 1863 she was the oldest person living in the town and she was the first person to be interred in the new Roman Catholic section of the Cemetery.
