APRIL 2014 BIOGRAPHICAL ADDITIONS TO RECORDS

In April our busy Research Team added biographical information to 52 records on the website and for one person, Dr Thomas Inglis of Ryde, who died on 4 October 1924 and was cremated at Woking.

Lots of interesting stories were uncovered by our Research Team in April including:

* Report of the death of Miss Mary Ann WHITTY in April 1959, she was Matron of the Isolation Hospital in Nunwell Lane until its closure.

* Report of the death of Mr James SWEENEY in May 1964 at the age of 90. Prior to retirement Mr Sweeney had worked on the outside staff of Ryde Borough Council. In January 1958 Mr and Mrs Sweeney celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary.

* Report of the death of Mr George SLOACOMBE in January 1950. Mr Sloacombe moved to Ryde in 1901 and until his retirement had been employed by the Ryde Gaslight Company. He had also had a lifelong interest in the St John’s Ambulance Brigade and during WW2 he gave his time to train ARP personnel.

* Census details and information about the death of Reginald DRIVER from Ryde. He was a rifleman in the Hampshire Regiment and died on 7 October 1917, he was buried at Baghdad War Cemetery and remembered on his parents grave as Ryde Cemetery.
