JUNE 2014 BIOGRAPHICAL ADDITIONS TO RECORDS

Ann Barrett - Researcher
Ann Barrett - Researcher

In June our busy Research Team added biographical information to 57 records on the website and for 2 people interred elsewhere.

Lots of interesting stories were uncovered by our Research Team in June including:

* Report of the death of Mr George Henry Curtis in October 1892. Mr Curtis was founder of the railway carriers’ business Curtiss & Son. He was also a member of the Town Council where he was known to be rather cantankerous.

* Report of the death of Mr Richard Wilkins in March 1899. He had for 55 years been in service to the Rev and Mrs Maynard.

* Report of the death of Mr Edward Turtle in March 1898. Mr Turtle had an art gallery in Union Street and was an accomplished artist himself having painted the portraits of many Island residents.

* Report of the Fashionable wedding of Miss Mary Leach with her cousin Mr Claude Pemberton Leach in July 1889. The bride wore a dress of rich white brocaded satin and was attended by eight bridesmaids. The list of wedding presents runs to several pages!
