Service of Remembrance

Poppies and Forget-me-nots

Our 1916 Centenary Commemoration culminated in a Service of Remembrance conducted by Canon Graham Morris in the South Chapel of Ryde Cemetery on Thursday evening 10th November. The attendance of 31 included representatives of the Royal British Legion, 3rd Ryde Girls Brigade with their Standards and the Mayor of Ryde Cllr Henry Adams who later commented that he had found the event “very moving”.

Accompanied by atmospheric background music the service included information spoken by  Terry Clarkson of the British Legion on the conduct and casualties relating to the battles of Jutland and the Somme. The last post was sounded by young trumpeter Isabelle Wilson and accompanied by the dipping of the standards. Two minutes silence followed before reveille was sounded. The service ended with Canon Morris blessing the fields containing poppies and-forget-me nots which had been made by the Girls Brigade, Greenmount School, visitors to Ryde Library, members of the general public and RSHG.

Focus then moved to the North Chapel where the latest entries in the Books of Remembrance could be perused and your own dedication added if you wished. Refreshments were served with donations going to the British Legion Poppy Appeal.
