Supporting Northwood Cemetery

Several RSHG members attended the Northwood Cemetery Heritage Project Launch Event on 11 October. The 2 chapels have been beautifully restored and had many interesting displays to view. We heard from a variety of speakers including founder and present members of Friends of Northwood Cemetery, representatives of the Heritage Lottery Fund and the Isle of Wight Council. Pupils and staff from Lanesend Primary School and Christ the King College were also present, reading and exhibiting some of the work they had done in connection with the project. The Rev. Amanda Collinson blessed the East Chapel.

After lunch which was served in the West Chapel (Heritage Resource Centre), the celebrations continued when we congregated at the Gazebo where the Lanesend Primary School Choir sang for us. There followed the Opening of the Natural Burial Ground and prayers were said at the new Muslim Prayer Board. The official proceedings concluded with Rev. Collinson blessing the WW2 Mass Grave.

This was a most enjoyable event and all those who participated in the project should feel very proud indeed of their achievements and success. We at RSHG (Ryde Social Heritage Group) wish FONC (Friends of Northwood Cemetery) continued success and are always happy and willing to offer our support and friendship in the future.
