Visiting the Ancestor’s

Visiting the Tomb in St Thomas's Churchyard

This last Tuesday 9th November, 2021, we were privileged to have join us, a couple from Worthing, Carole and Tony Smith, who have been researching Carole’s family tree.

Clearing the tomb

Ann Barrett has been helping them with their research and members of RSHG met them at the Resource Centre.  They had visited Haylands Manor in the morning and then laid some flowers at another relative’s grave in Ryde Cemetery.  After lunch Carole and Tony met a group of us at St Thomas’ Church and we had special permission to go into the church to see a memorial on the wall of Vice Admiral Walter lock, a 4x Great Grandfather of Carole’s.

In preparation for the visit, on Friday of last week a team from RSHG went along to the churchyard at St Thomas’ to clear the brambles and ivy from the tomb of Walter lock, his wife Sarah Ann and  Captain Nagle Lock their son.

It was an amazing time spent, with a very appreciative couple.
