January Quarterly Members Meeting with Friends & Guests

The House of Industry, Carisbrooke (Workhouse)

On Saturday morning 8th January we held our quarterly Members Meeting at the George Street Centre Ryde.  29 people attended, including 7 visitors, which was very encouraging considering we still have Covid restrictions, and the appalling weather which struck on the day.  Our usual display boards were set up for members to look at, on the subject of Ryde Pier, also a raffle was held, refreshments, and sales of calendars and other items.

The presentation that morning was by our Honorary President Richard Smout, Heritage Service Manager. His talk was entitled “A Helping Hand” which covered how over the years the poor were looked after on the Isle of Wight.  It was a brilliant talk with a power point production, and an array of facts and statistics.  It was really interesting and kept our attention for over an hour.

Many thanks for all who supported us and of course our volunteers on the day.
