Fishbourne near Ryde

Cottage Fishbourne 1892 used by the Chief Coastguard

Fishbourne was always an ideal location for the Coastguards, with easy access to the Solent and coast, a good place to view what was going on along that section of the coastline.  Originally a great deal of shipbuilding took place at that spot.  Mr. Daniel List, who in his time was a well-known ship builder at Fishbourne on the Isle of Wight.  Born 1782, Daniel was the second son of James List. Daniel List succeeded his father to the shipbuilding business as his older brother had died in 1825.  The business already had a high reputation for skill and quality.  In 1824 the yard built the second “Falcon,” a full rigged ship of 351-tons, for Lord Yarborough.  Daniel List who had taken over the yard before his father’s death, built in 1826 an early paddle steamer for the Portsmouth-Ryde route. The 47-ton vessel which was named “Lord Yarborough” was launched on 14th June that year.

1st August 1925 New Landing Place
The work of dredging the channel and turning place at the entrance to Wootton Creek for the new landing place of the Southern Railway boats, is now proceeding at a great pace.  Dredging has been going on day and night, and it is hoped that the new route would be available for August.  However, the soft sand has been slipping and filling in the dredged portions causing some delay in the completion of the scheme.  Prolonged dredging may have to be continued regularly before the Fishbourne landing is practicable.

Now (2025) Fishbourne is a regular docking place for boarding and dis-embarking of the Wightlink car and passenger ferry.

Considering it being a rather busy and necessary entry point to the Island, the Fishbourne area itself was/is rather small, with just a number of residential properties on Fishbourne Lane, a village inn, and of course the ferry boarding point.  Other than the Ferry Terminal it is not commercial.
