Great Soprano in Concert at Ryde
Carrie Lanceley, Soprano, 1911
Photographer, Swaine, London
Carrie Lanceley had just returned from a four year successful start to her career in London, when she presented this portrait to the Sydney Morning Herald Arts Critic.
The Isle of Wight Observer 18 January 1913, gave the following announcement concerning a special visit to the Island.
“At the Popular Concert next Monday, Miss Carrie Lanceley, the great Australian soprano, will be the vocalist. This will be the first opportunity Ryde people will have of hearing this wonderful singer and no doubt there will be a crowded audience. Amongst other things she will sing Stephen Adams’ “Ever so far away.”
Miss Lanceley spent her career touring many different countries, including London, England, but we believe that her visit in 1913 was the only time that she visited the Isle of Wight.
Note:
Carrie Lanceley was an Australian soprano, from Willoughby, a northern suburb of Sydney Australia. A following reference to her – Willoughby’s First Fifty Years: A Retrospect of the Jubilee Period of the Council of the Municipality of Willoughby for the years 1865 to 1915. Later on (in December, 1903) the Council’s patronage was granted to Miss Carrie Lanceley’s concert, also given on the occasion of her leaving for London.
