RYDAL MOUNT NURSING HOME, 76 Pellhurst Road, Ryde
Situated in Pellhurst Road, this property was used for maternity cases in the area, and later for the sick and elderly. It appeared that the house was not used for a great period of time. The Kelly’s Directory lists it as being in private hands (Mr Richard Arthur Shaw) in 1937. Mr. Shaw passed away in 1940 aged 81. By 1951 it had become a nursing home. Other directories only list the house by its number.
During the 2nd World War, the Isle of Wight County Hospital in Swanmore Road, was running out of room, having filled all the available space, they had begun looking for houses in nearby Partlands Avenue and the surrounding area. The first house to be taken on lease was the Towers. The Victor nursing home which occupied several houses in Partlands Avenue was at that time considered for private accommodation. It is believed that number 76 Pellhurst Road could have been identified for that purpose.
The Matron at Rydal Mount was Miss M. C. Brander, S.R.N., S.C.M. She was a Queen’s Nurse.
As a maternity patient, the fee for 12 days at Rydal Mount was £13.13s. and the labour room cost £2.2s., so £15.15s. in total.
