Ryde Eastern Esplanade Gardens

The Esplanade may be approached either from Union-street or by several streets that will be seen to run parallel.  In fact, a walk down the hills toward the sea will bring one out on the sea front.  Taking either Union-street or George-street we turn to the right, passing the Victoria bathing pier, we enter upon the Esplanade and the ornamental gardens. The total area of the gardens, &c., is nine acres.

The gardens were laid out in 1880 at a cost of over £30,000, affording an extensive Esplanade and carriage drive of nearly a mile. The area is provided with Shelters, Band Stand, Flower Beds and Fountains. The whole forming a delightful promenade, from which extensive views of the neighbouring coast, and craft of all description can be seen and admired without fatigue. The Canoe Lake is to the east of the Gardens and is of a uniform depth of 2ft

Ornamental Fountain

Extremely ornamental and much admired by the many visitors and inhabitants alike.  Over the years one just had to have their photograph taken while striking a pose in front of a fountain.

Where have all the fish gone?  At some point the circular ponds surrounding the fountains, were drained and the water was replaced by plants.
