Ashey Congregational Chapel (far right)

ASHEY CONGREGATIONAL CHAPEL
Ashey Road/Green Lane, Ryde

This Congregational Chapel was established in 1839 when a couple of the George Street congregation members held a Sunday School and evening service in a room.  Then a small piece of land was found on the corner of Ashey Road and Green Lane, which was purchased and a small chapel built at a cost of £126..  The Chapel was opened on 17th December 1839. It was established from money raised through subscriptions, and was affiliated to the George Street Congregational Church, George Street, Ryde.

The chapel at Ashey operated until the 1920’s.  It was purchased by the Ryde Borough Council and demolished, to facilitate the road-widening at the junction bottle-neck.

Note:
Even though our photograph only shows a very small portion of the Ashey Congregational Chapel on the corner (far right), it is important to remember that it served the people of this outlying district for 80 years.
