He married Sarah Jordan at St Jude's Church, Islington on 13th August 1857 and had 6 children; Georgina Sara 1858, Arthur George 1859 both born in Ryde, Alice M 1862 Gosport, John William 1864, Minnie 1866 and Robert Charles 1869, all Ryde. In 1861 he was a domestic servant at Winterbourne, Bonchurch but his family lived nearby at Broadwood (cottage?) Bonchurch and in 1871 he was a butler in domestic service but living at 25 Arthur Street. He died of phtisis on 4th November 1874.

His wife Sarah, who was born in Brompton, Middlesex in 1830 survived him, dying of Bronchitis and asthenia on 10th March 1891".

Definition of Asthenia from MedicineNet.com: Asthenia: Weakness. Lack of energy and strength. Loss of strength. The word asthenia is not much used in medicine today, although it is a prominent part of myasthenia, a loss of muscle strength, as in myasthenia gravis.

Asthenia is from the Greek asthenes, from a- (without) + sthenos (strength). Phtisis is the Greek word for consumption.
