Rev James Goodlad

Title: Rev
Forenames: James
Surnames: Goodlad
Burial Date: 06/02/1620
Age at Death Years: 66
Grave Type: Marked
Map Reference Number: RSHG HC004
Plot Number: Binstead Holy Cross Churchyard D4-277
Grave Description: Large table tomb, central front text panel with stone block surrounding border and bold relief lettering in old English.

Grave Condition Description: Very good considering age of memorial. Central crack on top of table and missing portion towards central back edge. Much erosion of stone, heavy lichen and moss cover but inscription is clearly legible.

Other Information: The record in a churchyard of a death as early as 1620 is quite rare. in England, permanent memorials outside of churches do not appear in any number until the later years of the 17th century. Early memorials from this period will often include the name or initials of the person who caused the memorial to be erected so I.G. at the end of this inscription is possibly a member of the Goodlad family. - Source: Guide to the Parish Church of the Holy Cross, Binstead (Nick Wallace 2007)
