Aug 1st 1857: IMPROVEMENTS – A great improvement is being effected by forming a raised footpath under Mr. ARABIN’s wall on the South side of the Esplanade, which when completed, will be a great convenience.
Aug 1st 1857: SPOILING OF THE SHORE – One thing is certain that the shore is being spoiled by the large quantities of sand, gravel, &c. constantly taken from it and the right of the highway to low water mark, which has existed over the renowned Ryde Sands. It is in danger of being entirely destroyed.
Aug 8th 1857: WATERING OF STREETS – Since the water has been laid on the Water Committee have watered the streets by means of a hose from the mains. They broke up the old water carts and converted one (at an expense of £9) into a cart for scavenging.
