Aug 16th 1962: SCENT MACHINES – Dear Sir, I wonder whose bright idea it was to have scent machines installed in the ladies convenience in Ryde (at six pence a time). Residents and visitors alike agree, the real need is a machine for soap leaves — plus tissues — or event a good deodorant. This would prove more hygienic than all the pseudo French perfumes !
Aug 16th 1962: PEN PAL WANTED – Dear Sir, Would you please publish my name for a pen pal in the Isle of Wight. I am a 15 year old girl and would like a girl friend the same age. My hobbies include cycling, dogs, radio listening, stamp collecting and learning about other countries. Yours sincerely, Margaret THWAITES, New Zealand.

Aug 16th 1962: JAVELINS – The danger of throwing javelins at Simeon Street Recreation Ground, Ryde, while the field was open to the general public was stressed by Miss B. M. HUTCHINGS at the meeting of the Borough Council. There had already been two serious accidents, and there could be a fatal one if adequate precautions were not taken.
Aug 23rd 1962: NEW ZEALAND – Thanks were conveyed to the Isle of Wight Times from Mrs. KING, for kindly sending a copy of their newspaper, every week since she and her husband emigrated to New Zealand 50 years ago. She then passes them onto her sister, Mrs. COOMBES, who in turn sends some copies to her nephew in North Queensland.
