Dec 5th 1925:  RYDE YOUNG HELPERS’ LEAGUE – The public of the Ryde district again gave proof of their whole-hearted support of the splendid work of Dr. Barnardo’s Homes, by patronising in large numbers the annual bazaar organised by the local habitation of the Young Helpers’ League, and held at the Town-hall on Thursday.  Capt. P. D. MACDONALD, M.P., was to have performed the opening ceremony.

Dec 5th 1925:  WIDOWS PENSONS – Over 19,000 widows have failed to claim pensions under the Widows and Orphans Act. Under which pensions of 10s. a week or more will be payable at the beginning of the New Year.  The Ministry of Health are offering every assistance to widows to make their claims for pensions.  To establish a claim a widow must have at least one legitimate child under 14 years of age.

Dec 12th 1925:  DEATH OF HOTELIER – Many in Ryde learned with regret of the death of Mr. Alfred AUSTIN, formerly landlord of the Black Horse and Strand Hotels, which occurred at the County Hospital on Friday week, at the age of 59.

Dec 12th 1925:  SPORTS CLUB DANCE – Between 200 and 300 assembled at the Town-hall on Thursday for a dance in aid of the Sports Club.  A long programme included spot waltz competitions. H. BLACKMORE was M.C. and REED’s orchestra supplied the music.

Dec 12th 1925:  CHESS MATCH – The Vectis Chess Club played the match for the Hants Trophy and League at the Portsmouth Chess Club against the A team, nine boards aside.  The Y.C.A. were again unable to play M. DAWS, whereas the Portsmouth team retained their champion.  One game has to be adjudicated.

Dec 12th 1925:  ENTERTAINMENT – The Ryde Town Band was responsible for an entertainment at the Town-hall on Wednesday in aid of the Mayor’s Goodwill Fund.  Under their bandmaster Mr. R. H. COOKE D.C.M. the band have made headway and their performance reached a high standard of efficiency.  A number of pleasing pieces were played.

Dec 19th 1925:  PICTURESQUE RYDE WEDDING – Much interest was excited in the wedding at St. John’s Church, Ryde on Tuesday, between Mr. Sidney Alexander RANDLE, of Balmoral House, Ryde, and Miss Violet PEARCE, eldest daughter of Mr. William PEARCE.  A packed congregation assembled at the church, where the Rev. A. T. RANDLE, vicar of Upton, Notts. (uncle of the bridegroom) officiated.

Dec 19th 1925:  LICENSE TRANSFERS – The transfer of the following licenses were granted:  The Granville Hotel, High-street, from Mrs. BUTCHER to Mr Howard SCOTT, of London; The Wheatsheaf Inn, Nelson-street, from A. BARSDALE, to Charles James CROFTON, of Gosport; and the Fountain Inn, Player-street, from W. A. GREEN to Wallace HART, of Aylesbury.

Dec 19th 1925:  CHRISTMAS SHOPPING – In a few days we shall be regaling our-selves with such foods and dainties as early as seems fashionable or seasonable at Christmas.  The brightness of the shop windows, with their wonderful displays, whet our appetites, and there are few of us who are not looking forward to days of feasting and pleasure.  The windows of the branches of the International Stores in the Island and their variety of Christmas dainties are a revelation to those who tell us that we do not know how to enjoy ourselves.
