February 1964

Isle of Wight Times:-

Feb 6th 1964: CELEBRATION – Edwin and Lucy BOWDITCH celebrated their Golden Wedding at their home, Myrtle Cottage, St. Johns Wood-road on Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. BOWDITCH moved to the Island in 1945 after a German bomb reduced their house and belongings to rubble and with the help of the railways they found a cottage at Ashey Station, where they remained until last year.

Feb 6th 1964: NEW RYDE LIBRARY – Plans for the conversion of the former School of Art, George-street, Ryde, prepared a year ago, to form a new home for the Ryde Library, are to be put into effect. Cost of the scheme is estimated at £39,500 and the Dr. John DOCKRAY bequest is expected to reduce that figure by £5,000. The C.C. are applying for a loan for the remainder.

Feb 20th 1964: MASKED BALL – About 70 members and friends of the Royal Victoria Yacht Club attended a St. Valentine’s Night Masked Ball at the clubhouse on Friday. The Rhythmic Mood Quartet provided the music.

Feb 20th 1964: TO THE EDITOR – Sir,—I call attention to a scandalous interruption of rights of the pedestrians of Haylands. Bottom of Corbett-road, new buildings in course of erection; to avoid muck we have to step in the road; to avoid cars we have to step into a narrow busy traffic lane; workmen’s cars parked near by causing problems. Now, Town Hall, what about it?

Feb 20th 1964: MEMORIAL – It is on record that when Kirkpatrick’s Bank failed in Ryde, quite a large sum had been lodged with them for a memorial to the victims of the “Royal George.” The proposed monument was never erected. The recent uncovering of some of these remains compels that a modest plaque be erected somewhere along the Strand. Surely not too much of a burden for a town of 20,000 inhabitants.

Feb 20th 1964: CARNIVAL – Fears that England’s oldest carnival, at Ryde, would not be held this year have been allayed. As usual, the event will take place during the first week of September.

Feb 20th 1964: WELTERWEIGHT – Representing the Southern Counties in the welterweight division against the Royal Navy at the R.N. Barracks, Portsmouth, last week, 23 year old Colin MARDEN, of Ryde A.B.C., won his bout.

Feb 20th 1964: SLIDES WIN CONTEST – When the I.W. Amateur Cine Society held a meeting last week, Mr. Peter WOODNUTT, of Ryde, was a popular winner of the Pritchard Flanders Cup for the best set of six 35 mm. transparencies during the current year.

Feb 27th 1964: STOLEN – Thieves have raided a hut shared by 10 local fisherman near the Esplanade Pavilion, Ryde, and stolen several fishing rods valued at £6 each, and a £5 reel.

Feb 27th 1964: SAVES WOMAN – P.C. Michael CHIVERS, a young off duty policeman, was working on his car at Battersby’s Garage, Hill-street, when someone told him there was smoke pouring from a nearby house, no. 13. The Fire Brigade and ambulance were sent for but before they arrived P.C. CHIVERS had carried the unconscious occupier from the house.

Feb 27th 1964: HOLIDAY – Mrs. L. SHAW of Binstead has won a 15-day sunshine holiday for two this summer in a nation-wide competition sponsored by the food manufacturers Crosse and Blackwell Limited. The competition attracted nearly a quarter of a million entries.
