Jan 7th 1965: OPINION GROUP – The monthly meeting was held at the Oasis, Ryde Esplanade on Monday. About 15 members attended and heard a talk on moral rearmament by Mrs. Sheila de QUINCEY of Freshwater.
Jan 7th 1965: CHILDRENS PARTY – Ryde Post Office and Social Club held their Christmas children’s party at the London Hotel on Saturday, when 71 children enjoyed an excellent tea. This was followed by Father Christmas distributing presents, fruit and sweets.
Jan 7th 1965: POPPY DAY – The final total of money collected for Poppy Day in the district last
year was £173.17s., it was announced this week.
Jan 7th 1965: CLEAN FOOD – At a meeting of the Caterers Association, it was decided to investigate the possibility of establishing a Clean Food Guild. Cllr. MINGHELLA, chairman, said it would encourage greater cleanliness in hotels and restaurants.
Jan 7th 1965: HONOURED – A Ryde man with 31 years service in the Royal Air Force was awarded the M.B.E. in the New Year’s Honours List. He is Flt. Lt. Denis Cleave TAYLOR, of “Bindoon,” St. John’s Road. He joined the R.A.F. in 1934.
Jan 7th 1965: SURPRISE DISCLOSURE – For months Hampshire and I.W. Police were unable to serve summonses on a 22 year old gypsy because he had no fixed address and they could not trace him. In fact for six months of this time his address was definitely permanent–in Winchester Prison.
Jan 7th 1965: CINEMA – All family programme on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at The Scala Cinema showing, “The Wizard of Oz” staring Judy GARLAND & Ray BOLGER. Also “Tom Thumb” staring Russ TAMBLYN, Alan YOUNG and Peter SELLERS.
Jan 14th 1965: BUS DISPUTE – As the buses continue to rumble along Mayfield-road, Ryde, so does the controversy. Some residents wanted it, others did not. At the Public Works Committee meeting this week the decision was made. The buses will continue.
Jan 14th 1965: FLOODLIGHTS – Because they fear that vandals would quickly smash the equipment, which would not last 10 minutes, Ryde Parks and Entertainments Committee have decided against floodlighting Appley Tower on the sea front.
Jan 14th 1965: YOUNG HOSTS – More than 100 old folks of Ryde enjoyed tea, jellies, cakes and biscuits at Ryde Methodist Church when members of youth organisations in the Ryde area entertained them at their second annual New Year party.
Jan 14th 1965: RADAR TRAP – Seven motorists were caught in radar speed-traps on November 7 and 8, and they were fined by the Borough Magistrates on Thursday, when they wrote pleading guilty.
Jan 14th 1965: SUNSHINE ISLE – Remember this film made for the I.W. Publicity Council some nine years ago, which is still being requested for mainland showings and helping to boost the holiday trade? This production was the work of Mr. Frank MELLANBY, of Ryde, and two fellow members of the I.W. Amateur Cine Society.
