July 5th 1962: TEACHERS – Arrangements have been made for the Interchange of Teachers between the United Kingdom and the United States of America, under which Mr. and Mrs. GIBSON of “Pinewood,” Mayfield-road, Ryde, will be spending the school year commencing in September teaching in schools in Denver, Colorado. Mr. GIBSON is at Ryde C.E. Junior School and Mrs. GIBSON at Haylands Infant’s School.

July 12th 1962: SUPPORT – Lack of support is worrying Ryde Amateur Boxing Club, and at their annual general meeting at the Eagle Hotel, High-street, Ryde, the hon. secretary, Mr. Tom GIBSON, said “If the club is going to progress and develop, it is vital we receive more support from the public.” He appealed for volunteers to dismantle the club’s hut at Marlborough-road, for re-assembly at Binstead on a site offered by the Borough Council.

July 12th 1962: COUNCIL BREVITIES – When a capital works programme is considered by the Parks & Entertainments Committee, it will include the possible provision of a children’s paddling pool at the end of the Canoe Lake at a cost of £1,000, including two small sand pits.——–Improvements have been carried out to Ryde Town Hall staging extension, with tiers of seats, used for special occasions; an examination showed that the former extension was unsafe.

July 12th 1962: HOVERCRAFT – Hovercraft trips for the public will be offered from Ryde next month. For three weeks in August the Saunders-Roe 60 m.p.h. SRN 2 will operate experimental passenger services from the beach near Appley, and it is hoped to gain the approval of Portsmouth City Council to use Southsea as a mainland terminus.

July 12th 1962: REGATTA – Brilliant sunshine attracted hundreds of people to Ryde Rowing Club’s 86th annual regatta off the clubhouse on Sunday. The regatta was the largest and most successful of the post war years. The clubhouse balcony and all available space on the slipway was crowded with spectators and crews.

July 12th 1962: DOCK GREEN – Miss Dorothy CASEY, known to millions as “Nancy” in B.B.C.’s “Dixon of Dock Green,” opened the annual fete of St. Michael’s Church, Swanmore. Miss CASEY said she had friends in Ryde, and had spent her holidays here three years in succession.

July 26th 1962: PADDLE STEAMER – A thick wooden pile splintered like matchwood on Tuesday when the British Railways Paddle Steamer “Ryde” struck it on approaching No. 2 berth at Ryde Pierhead. Three fenders and other parts of the pierhead were also damaged and the berth is expected to be out of action for at least three days. The “Ryde” got away with only a dented hull.

July 26th 1962: HARD TO SWALLOW – Two cars with the registration TOT have been sold by Wight Motors, of Ryde — one to a St. Helens barman and the other to a Ryde licensee !

July 26th 1962: YACHT AGROUND – In a force seven gale a large white yacht, about eight to ten tons, ran aground on a sand bar half a mile off Ryde and took a terrific battering from the waves. Mr. Patrick MCGROGGAN, proprietor of the Hotel Ryde Castle, saw the yacht in trouble from his window and raised the alarm. Poole lifeboat was in the vicinity and remained in easy reach in case the situation worsened. After an hour however, the tide freed the yacht.

July 26th 1962: MERGER – The County Education Committee had agreed to the amalgamation of Oakfield C.E. Junior School and Ryde County Junior School in the county re-organisation of schools in the borough. There would be three junior schools instead of five.
