June 5th 1909: POPULAR ENTERTAINMENT – The Band of the 8th Battalion (Princess Beatrice’s) Hampshire Regiment will again perform on the Western Esplanade on Sunday evening, when a collection will be made to aid the funds of the Royal I.W. County Hospital.
June 5th 1909: FASHION – Apparently edible trimmings for hats seems to be regarded as the correct thing, as one of our lady visitors at Whitsun gloried in a large hat decorated with carrots — red velvet carrots.
June 5th 1909: PONTOON – The new landing pontoon, which is being constructed on the west side of the Pier will be a great boon to yachtsmen visiting Ryde.
June 12th 1909: FORTHCOMING EVENTS – Sat 12th, Naval Review Spithead; Bowling Match Ryde v Godalming; Cricket Match at Partlands. Sun 13th, Band at Esplanade Gardens. 24th, Rose Show at Buckingham Villa.
June 12th 1909: RYDE TOWN COUNCIL – Alderman SWEETMAN moved the adoption of the Public Works Committee report as follows, “Your committee report that a plan was deposited by Messrs. WHEELER Bros on 25th May for a proposed new road from St. John’s-road to Riboleau-street, and recommend that the plan, being in accordance with the by-laws, be approved.”
June 19th 1909: FIRE BRIGADE – The Ryde Fire Brigade had a practice at Nineham on Monday evening.
June 19th 1909: ACCIDENT – Owing to his horse stumbling, Alderman S. FOWLER, J.P. was thrown into the roadway in Swanmore-road on Thursday, but fortunately escaped serious injury.
June 19th 1909: YACHTS – On Wednesday evening the Model Yacht Club held their second race for 10-raters, the boats being placed in pairs on the tournament system.
June 19th 1909: BANDS – It is time bands were heard nightly in the Esplanade Gardens, especially now that efforts are being made to attract visitors to the town earlier this year.
June 19th 1909: ROWING CLUB – The new racing galley for the Ryde Rowing Club, which will be delivered shortly, is one of the best and most up to date boats Claspers turn out. With such a large membership of likely young men and a fine modern galley, the club will probably have a very successful season.
June 19th 1909: ADVERT – The Pier Pavilion, 21st June for two weeks. * PARAGON BIOSCOPE & CONCERT PARTY. * A complete change of pictures every other evening. * Special Matinees. * Ordinary Admission: Reserved (tip up) Seats 2s. and 1s.6d. * Unreserved 1s. (including Pier toll and tram rides to and from Pavilion). * Back seats and Balcony 6d. (including Pier toll only). * Doors open 7.45.
June 26th 1909: PAVILION – A commodious pavilion is being erected on the Esplanade Gardens for the accommodation of a concert party who will shortly make their appearance in the town.
June 26th 1909: BEE DISEASE – The Board of Agriculture & Fisheries desire to warn all bee-keepers that an outbreak of disease, believed to be identical with the Isle of Wight Bee Disease, has occurred in several hives in Buckinghamshire. The disease has destroyed almost all Bees on the Island. No remedy is known.
June 26th 1909: STONES – Bathers would be glad if the Corporation would utilize the stones that have collected in front of the bathing state, for building the new groyne.
