Jun 4th 1964: OAKFIELD F.C. – A cheque for £250 was presented to Oakfield Football Club on Friday at the Hotel Ryde Castle by Oakfield F.C. Supporters’ Club who entertained the footballers and their wives and friends to a dinner and dance.
Jun 4th 1964: SILVER CHORDS – The annual “birthday” party was held last Wednesday at the Oasis Restaurant, 63 members attending. A cake bearing seven candles was served on a revolving musical box which played “Happy Birthday.” Entertainment followed.
Jun 11th 1964: RYDE NURSE – A new type of sling has been designed by Sister Doris SIMPSON of Ratcliffe-avenue, Ryde, who works in the emergency and out-patient department of the Royal I.W. County Hospital. The sling is disposable, waterproof, durable and inexpensive.
Jun 11th 1964: CAR BOOM – Already more than 1,000 new cars have been registered on the Island this year. Half the annual average. The Island has 25,000 vehicles and already a shadow of a problem has been cast.
Jun 18th 1964: PRESENTATION – Six teaspoons decorated with the Trefoil were presented to Mrs Margaret WINDELER of “Modwena,” West Hill-road, on Friday to mark her 21 years as captain of the 5th Ryde Holy Trinity Guide Company.
Jun 18th 1964: BIRTHDAY VISIT – Surprise visitors on Saturday for Miss Edith HAWKINS, celebrating her 92nd birthday at her home, 9 Warwick-place, were the Deputy Mayor, Cllr. Wilfred CAPLE, and Mrs. CAPLE.
Jun 18th 1964: MYSTERY – A large cigar-shaped object travelling very low and fast towards the south, reported to have startled holidaymakers on the beach at Seaview on Tuesday afternoon, remained unexplained yesterday. Mainland Service officials said nothing of that description belonging to them was operating in the area at the time.
Jun 18th 1964: VECTIS PLAYERS – Sixty members and friends attended the Young Vectis Players’ first annul dinner and dance held at the London Hotel, Ryde on Saturday. Among those present were Ald. William SUTTON, president, and Mrs. SUTTON.
Jun 18th 1964: FROM CANADA – A once-in-a-lifetime trip to renew old acquaintances brought a 63 year old couple from Canada to Ryde yesterday. It was in June, 1912, when Miss Victoria SILVESTER, daughter of a Ryde taxi driver, emigrated to Ontario, Canada, with her parents. Several of her old friends in Ryde had a pleasant surprise when she called on them with her husband. Today they return to the mainland and shortly they return to Canada.
Jun 25th 1964: LETTER TO THE EDITOR – Parking causes a big problem during the summer. What about Appley Park? It is not, as far as I can see, urgently needed, and the buses could very well make good use of this park and thus avoid cluttering up Ryde Eastern Esplanade. G.G.M.
Jun 25th 1964: FLAG DAY FOR DEAF – If this should catch the eye of anyone able to spare an hour to help us on Saturday next, tins may be obtained from “Easthill,” Home for the Deaf, Ashey.
Jun 25th 1964: BOROUGH BAND – “One of the most enjoyable concerts ever given at the Esplanade Pavilion,” was the comment of regular patrons of the Ryde Borough Band, after their performance on Sunday evening. A large audience had heard a variety of music and three vocal items by the band’s resident singer, Anne GLASSEY.
