Mar 13th 1915: LICENSING – The Mayor said the Licensing Committee had decided to renew the licenses of the Rajah Brook and the Solent Hotel, and refer those of the Victoria Inn and the Cygnet for compensation.

Mar 13th 1915: ADVERT – Modern School for Boys, Ashey Road, Ryde. Day and Boarding School. Principal Mr. A. K. Spiers ALEXANDER, A.C.P. (honours). Miss ALEXANDER, Piano and Violin. The School is in the healthiest part of the town and has the most modern ventilation.

Mar 20th 1915: LIFEBOAT – The quarterly lifeboat practice took place on Thursday under the direction of Coxswain Tom FORD. Mr. E. H. STANFIELD, a member of the Committee, formed part of the crew.

Mar 20th 1915: SOCIAL – A Tulip Social was held at the Lecture Hall of the Y.M.C.A. on Thursday evening. Charades, games, and musical items were indulged in, refreshments were partaken of, and selections on the gramophone constituted an enjoyable evening.

Mar 20th 1915: THOUGHTS – Millions of men confronting one another in ditches, drenched with rain, benumbed with cold, smitten with disease, helpless night and day under the strain of shells, dying by thousands in hourly hand-to-hand struggles, is almost insupportable; it overshadows the world like an ominous cloud black with death. But never in all the chronicles of time has the immortal spirit in men more gloriously triumphed over mortal hardship.

Mar 20th 1915: CATS – Mr. Wilfred G. AUSTIN, of the Wheatsheaf, Nelson-street, informs us that he has recently lost two valuable young Persian cats through being, as he alleges, wantonly poisoned. He hopes that the public intimation of his loss may put cat owners of other valuable cats on their guard.

Mar 20th 1915: ACCIDENT – Mrs. Elizabeth BIGGS, the wife of Mr. Charles BIGGS, 33 Prince-street, was on Wednesday admitted to the hospital suffering from rather serious burns through accidentally falling on the fire.

Mar 20th 1915: MEMORIAL CHAPEL – A new chapel which has been added to St. John’s Church in memory of the late Lord CALTHORPE, was dedicated on Tuesday afternoon. The new chapel which was erected at a cost of £450 by the Dowager Lady CALTHORPE, is on the south side of the Church, and is in keeping with the main features of the building.

Mar 20th 1915: GREAT SAVING – Gas at 3d. Per 1,000 cubic feet effects a great saving when compared with coal at over 40s. Per ton.

Mar 20th 1915: HEALTH HINT – There is nothing more irritable than a cough in children. From a doctor, a novel remedy is, by promise of rewards and punishments, induce children to simply hold their breath when tempted to cough and in a little while you will see how some children are entirely recovered.

Mar 27th 1915: OSBORNE – We are requested to state that the State Apartments and the Swiss Cottage Museum, Osborne, will be closed to the public on Good Friday, but will be open on Easter Monday, the 5th April next. From 1st April they will be open to the public on Tuesdays and Fridays only.

Mar 27th 1915: TRAIN SERVICE – The London Brighton and South Coast Railway Company have arranged to reinstate the 10.55 a.m., Portsmouth Harbour to Victoria (fast train), thereby improving the service from the Isle of Wight to London by 51 minutes.

Mar 27th 1915: ASHEY PARISH COUNCIL – In the matter of relieving distress caused by the war, the Council are pleased to say the work of enquiry and investigation was willingly taken up by a committee of ladies formed at their request.
