Isle of Wight Observer
May 1st 1915: BOWLING – The Ryde Bowling greens in the Eastern Esplanade Gardens will open for the season today. The greens are looking at their best. The opening match at the Bowling Club will be on Thursday next when the Mayor and Corporation will set the ball rolling in more ways than one.
May 1st 1915: THANKS – The Dowager Countess of Dudley, through the matron of the Davenport Nursing Home, desires to express her warmest thanks to all those ladies and gentlemen who have given subscriptions, donations, gifts, provided entertainments and in many ways contributed to the welfare of convalescent soldiers at the Home.
May 1st 1915: WOMEN’S GOSSIP – Collars and shirts form the two burning questions of the hour, in the realm of dress. The new collar is deep and full pleating, worn almost under the ear. Sunshades are to be very much used this summer, as the small hat provides little or no protection from the sun. Transparent brims are to be a feature of millinery.
May 8th 1915: WHAT SHALL WE DRINK – Those who, in the interests of the country have decided to follow the example set by the King in banishing wines, spirits and beer from the Royal household during the war, will find an admirable substitute in barley water.
May 8th 1915: FIRE – On Thursday afternoon it was reported to the Police that a pair horsed oil van was on fire near Mr. W. DORE’s stores in St. John’s Road. The Fire Brigade were summoned and proceeded to the spot and extinguished the outbreak by chemical appliance.
May 15th 1915: SHADOW OF CONSCRIPTION – It would be a pity, after the voluntary system has yielded such splendid results, if conscription should be necessary, but the possibility has to be faced. Hundreds of thousands have risked all for their country’s sake, but there are thousands more who should have been among the first to go but have no intention of going.
May 22nd 1915: WHITSUNTIDE – The Band of the Royal Marine Artillery under the Conductorship of Lieut. B. S. GREEN, M.V.O., will give concerts in the Western Esplanade Gardens on Saturday and Whit-Monday.
May 22nd 1915: ADVERT – Holloway’s Pills purify the blood, strengthen the nerves, act powerfully yet soothingly on the liver and bowels, headaches, tremblings, with lassitude and general inability speedily cured.
May 29th 1915: RIFLE RANGE – On Thursday afternoon an open-air rifle range in connection with the Miniature Rifle Club was opened by Captain R. M. ALEXANDER, J.P. The range, which is intended to take the place during the next few months of the indoor one at premises in Union-street, is situated in the old timber yard, Monkton-street, and provides for firing at 25 and 50 yards.
May 29th 1915: BOY SCOUTS – On Thursday evening the Ryde troops of Boy Scouts held a church parade. They mustered 109 strong in Lind-street. On returning to the Town Hall, the combined troops gave three hearty cheers for the King before being dismissed.
May 29th 1915: PROPERTY MARKET – Messrs, WALLIS, RIDDETT & Co. have recently let the following houses in this neighbourhood: Fairthorn, Pellhurst-road to Capt HUGHES; Highclere, West-street to Dr. R. C. H. KENNEDY; Travancore, Ashey-road to the Rev. G PALMER LEWIS; Calshot Villa, Yelfs-road, to Mrs SCOTT.
May 29th 1915: CHIMNEY FIRE – Yesterday morning a fire occurred in a chimney at 36 Monkton-street, in the occupation of Miss SMITH. The police were communicated with and P.C. PAUL proceeded to the house with a hand pump with which he extinguished the outbreak.
