May 1st 1926:  POSTAL PRESENTATION – A pleasant ceremony took place at the Post Office on Friday week, when Mr. William BURT, who has served for 26 years as a postman, was presented with a handsome tapestry arm-chair as a mark of affectionate esteem from his fellow employees.  Mr. W. GRIMES (overseer) made the presentation.  He was wished many happy years of retirement.

May 1st 1926:  I.W. BENCH – Two young schoolboys of poor appearance, one aged 12 and the other nine, coming from the Oakfield district of Ryde, were charged at a Children’s Court with endangering the lives of railway passengers by placing a cast-iron drain cover on the railway line.  Wilfred Stanley BISHOP, an engine driver, said the engine struck some obstruction on the left-hand rail at Smallbrook.  No damage was done to the engine.  The Bench ordered each defendant to receive three strokes of the birch contingent upon the doctor finding them fit to receive the punishment.

May 1st 1926:  ADVERTISEMENT – Cook-General, experienced, wanted, £60; General, £32; good references essential, sleep in. — Sister GENTLE, Westward Nursing Home, 20 Argyle-street, Ryde.

May 1st 1926:  CHARITY FOOTBALL – A comic football match, organised as the result of a challenge between the British Legion and the choir of Holy Trinity Church, attracted a £6 gate to the football ground on Thursday, the proceeds being divided between the Legion and the Nursing Association. There were many amusing incidents in a thrilling match

May 8th 1926:  BAND SYMPHONY CONCERT – Under the able conductorship of Mr. R. H. COOKE, D.C.M., the Town Band gave an enjoyable concert at the Town-hall on Thursday week, when the attendance included the Mayor (Mr. Rowland RUSSELL).  The principal item in an accurately rendered and well varied programme was the band contest test piece for the forthcoming I.W. Musical Competition.

May 8th 1926:  BINSTEAD BRITISH LEGION SUCCESSES – The women’s branch of the British Legion is to be congratulated on their successes in the handicraft competition at the Legion head-quarters.  In the hospital outfit competition the branch, under the direction of Mrs. BOYCE and Mrs. STANNARD, secured the first-class certificate of merit; Individual merit was shown by Miss STANNARD, who gained a third-class certificate for a hand-made garment, and Mrs. WITHINSHAW for a pair of knitted stockings.

May 15th 1926:  STRIKER’S MEETING AT RYDE – On Friday week the new headquarters of the Ryde local Labour party, Star-street, was packed with strikers and their wives, who came from all parts of the Island by char-a-banc and cycles.  There was an address on “The present position.” Prior to the meeting the audience, who were seated on planks placed on soap-boxes, joined in singing and whistling popular tunes played upon a piano.

May 22nd 1926:  BOROUGH POLICE – Structural alterations to the Simeon Arms Hotel, Simeon-street, were approved by the Bench, on the application of Mr. J. W. PARNELL (licensee).

May 22nd 1926:  VETERANS – The locomotive “Ryde, No. 13” running on the Island Railway is said to be the oldest on passenger service in England.  During the strike it was driven by G. TOOGOOD, aged 74.  His relief driver was Major CREETH, M.C., and his stoker was Capt. J. G. FARDELL.

May 22nd 1926:  ISLAND FARMERS IN AFRICA – Mr. G. RUSSELL, of Little Whitefield, near Ryde, is among the 100 agriculturalists who, have recently returned from South Africa, after spending over two months in studying the farming industry in the Union and Rhodesia.

May 22nd 1926:  BINSTEAD CRICKET SEASON OPENS – The first match was played at the Recreation-ground on Thursday week, when the local team beat Ashey by 28 runs to 17.  A dance in aid of the Binstead Club, was held at the Parish-hall on Wednesday.  Mr. A. H. BAILY was M.C., and refreshments were served by Mesdames E. VENUS, HARRIS, DYER, AND JOLLIFFE.  Mr. C. DYER’s orchestra supplied the music.
