May 3rd 1975: PLANS SHELVED – The IW Indoor Swimming Pool Association, disappointed that plans for a council pool have been temporarily shelved, have pledged support for a private scheme for major development at Ryde Airport, because it includes the provision of a 25-metre, six-lane indoor pool. The planning application was put forward by the Westridge Construction Co.
May 3rd 1975: SPONSORED WALK – More than 40 walkers took part in a 20-mile sponsored police walk from Ryde to Brighstone on Sunday. The route, prepared by Mr. F. G. LEAL, the county council’s countryside officer took them through Arreton and over bridleways and footpaths. Those taking part included police officers, traffic wardens, civilian staff of police stations, special constables, members of the IW Ramblers’ Association, Ryde Harriers and friends.
May 3rd 1975: BIT OF FUN – A Ryde housewife who entered a national art competition organised by the TV Times for “a bit of fun” walked away with the first prize. Mrs. Rhoda KELLEWAY, of Buckingham Close, Ryde, was handed her prize—a cheque for a two-week painting holiday in Rome and art equipment. The presentation was televised by Southern television.
May 3rd 1975: MORE TIME TO STUDY PROJECT – Planning applications discussed by Ryde branch of the IW Society at a recent meeting included the proposed hypermarket at Ryde Airport. The meeting was told that an appeal by the developers against refusal of planning permission, which was due to be heard on Monday, had been put back for some weeks.
May 3rd 1975: GATEWAY CLUB – At a coffee morning held recently at 5 Spencer Glade, Ryde, £16 was raised for club funds. The club which meets at the Youth Centre, Ryde, provides rehabilitation and recreational facilities for ex-patients of Whitecroft Hospital and is entirely supported by voluntary contributions.
May 10th 1975: SWEAT IT OUT – A ruling by the Hampshire FA may condemn Ryde County Old Boys to a second division of the Island League next season. When the Island FA ordered the Old Boys to replay their first division match with fellow-relegation strugglers Parkhurst—which was abandoned when the Old Boys were in the lead—the Ryde club appealed to Hampshire. However, the county authorities backed the Island’s decision, and Ryde Old Boys and Parkhurst meet today to decide who accompanies Brading reserves into the second division next season.
May 17th 1975: CELEBRATION – Over 40 members of the 3rd Ryde Girls’ Brigade Company attended a special party for Captain Joy McCOMB celebrating 21 years as an officer in the Girls’ Brigade. The party at the George Street Baptist Church Hall on Thursday week, was also attended by Mrs. M. WHITTINGTON, Island Commissioner. Games were arranged by Miss S. WHITTINGSTALL and refreshments were served by officers and helpers.
May 17th 1975: HOTEL PLAN – A plan to extend and convert Weeks Hotel, Weeks Road, Ryde, into five self-contained flats has been approved by Medina Borough Council’s Planning Committee.
May 17th 1975: REPRESENTATION – Eighty pupils of Bishop Lovett Middle School, Ryde, represented the Island at the diocesan senior youth officer, at a “Come Alive” programme for young groups at Portsmouth Cathedral on Saturday. About 400 young people took part, and the Bishop Lovett pupils consisted of a choir and orchestra, whose ensemble contributions included two items from “Godspell.”
May 17th 1975: GARDENS OPEN – The grounds of Cedar Lodge, Puckpool, the home of Mr. and Mrs. GRIMALDI, will be open tomorrow under the National Garden Scheme.
May 17th 1975: RETURNED – Nightingales have returned to Whitefield Woods. The songsters left the woods, which flank the Ryde-Sandown highway, when forestry work started some years ago.
