Oct 7th 1876: DE VERE’S MODERN MARVELS – We would again remind our readers that this celebrated conjuror and humorist will give three of his entertainments on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday evenings next in the Town Hall, when we trust that he will be welcomed by a good audience.
Oct 7th 1876: VOYAGE TOWARDS THE NORTH POLE – On Thursday and Friday evenings next Commander CHEYNE, R.N. will give two lectures in the Town Hall, descriptive of North Pole discoveries, and Arctic expeditions. The lectures will be illustrated by dissolving views, and musical selections and accompaniments will enliven the proceedings that the entertainment will be as instructive as it will be entertaining.
Oct 7th 1876: PROPOSED EXTENSION TO SEAVIEW – A public meeting of the owners and ratepayers of this district was held at the schoolroom for the purpose of considering the advisability of making conjointly, with the Ryde Town Council, a public roadway from the Esplanade at Ryde, along the shore to sea View. It was considered absolutely necessary to have the road in front of Sea View if it were to be a real benefit to the place, and it was proposed to improve the Ryde end to a like extent.
Oct 14th 1876: PIER TRAM – Mr. W. E. RATCLIFFE was instructed by the Ryde Pier Directors, to apply to the Ryde Town Council to run a small traction tramway engine, similar to the one in use on the pier, between the Ryde Pier toll-gate and the St. John’s-road station, across the Esplanade without gates, until the new locomotive line proposed to be constructed by the London and South Western, and the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway Companies is completed, and to request that they will submit this application to the Council at their next meeting. Oct 14th 1876: LOCAL EMIGRANTS – The ship Woodlark took her final departure from Gravesend, bound for Brisbane, Queensland, and had on board the following number of emigrants, viz.; 76 married people, 100 single men, 46 single women, 61 children between the ages of 12 and 1, and 12 infants, making a total of 295 souls. The single girls are under the care of Mrs. JOHNSON; Dr. HENDERSON acting as surgeon superintendent.
Oct 21st 1876: TRADESMEN’S CLUB – We understand that a number of the tradesmen in Ryde are endeavouring to start a Tradesmen’s Club on much the same principle as the Working Men’s Club, but entirely non-political.
Oct 21st 1876: FASHIONABLE INTELLIGENCE – Lieut. and Mrs. ATKINSON have arrived at Lyndhurst House, Monkton-street, for the winter; Major-General MILNE, and Mrs. MILNE and family, have arrived at Percy Lodge, Strand; Mr. and Mrs. Hugh MEARES will return to their residence, Egremont Lodge, next week, from Brighton.
Oct 21st 1876: RYDE BOROUGH COUNCIL – A report was read from the Surveyor as to the result of his inspection of the Dame Schools.. Many of these seemed to be held in small rooms. One place was only 11ft. in breadth and width, and only 8ft. in length.
Oct 28th 1876: ACCIDENT – On Thursday morning a horse, attached to a van, belonging to Mr. BIGGS green-grocer, ran away in High-street. Near the Theatre the front wheel came off, and the driver was pitched out, luckily without sustaining any injury, and the horse falling down cut its knee rather severely.
Oct 28th 1876: CHRYSANTHEMUMS – The splendid show of Chrysanthemums in Messrs. DIMMICK & Sons’ large show house is a sight well worthy of inspection, containing, as it does, more than a hundred of the newest and best varieties of these poplar autumn flowers. The show house is open from 9 o’clock till 4.
Oct 28th 1876: RYDE PHILHARMONIC SOCIETY – Ladies and gentlemen wishing to join the above Society are requested to send in their names to Mr. F. SIMMS, Cumberland Villas, on or before Saturday November 4th, as after that date no new members will be admitted to take part in the first concert, which will be given on December 19th,
