Oct 4th 1913: Y.W.C.A. – Miss MERRY, president, and the members of the committee of the Young Women’s Christian Association, were “at home” on Tuesday to a company of subscribers and friends, who were received in the drawing room of Garfield House. Songs were contributed by Mrs. SALMON and Mr. GOLDING.

Oct 11th 1913: ROLLER SKATING – The Pier Pavilion will be open for roller skating on Monday October 13th, and onwards.

Oct 11th 1913: BOXING TOURNAMENT – It is intended to hold an important boxing tournament at the Theatre Royal, Ryde, on Oct 23rd. The chief item of which will be a 10-round contest between Seaman C. WALKER, H.M.S. Victory, and Drummer WYNNE, of the Royal Fusiliers, Parkhurst. Another contest will include Jack BUTCHER of Ryde, a promising young pugilist.

Oct 11th 1913: MARROW – A monster marrow, weighing 36lbs., grown by Mr. CALLOWAY, of Merston, has been exhibited during the week by C. M. TAYLOR, greengrocer, Ryde.

Oct 11th 1913: SALE OF WORK – A successful sale of work in aid of the funds of the Ryde District Nursing Association for the Sick Poor, was held in the Trinity Hall, Melville-street on Thursday afternoon and evening. Stalls bearing useful clothes, fancy articles and fruit etc.

Oct 18th 1913: FOOTBALL SMOKER – A highly successful smoking concert in aid of the funds of the Binstead Football Club was held in the Audit Room of the Fleming Arms Hotel, the Club’s Headquarters. W. BISHOP amused the the company with his humorous recitations and W. POOLE’s character songs were much appreciated.

Oct 18th 1913: ACCIDENT – On Monday evening a horse, attached to a trolley, the property of CHAPLIN & Co., bolted and crashed into Mr. C. J. De LAUNAY’s shop window, breaking two panes of glass, the woodwork of the shop door, and splitting the counter inside.

Oct 18th 1913: LATEST NOVELTY – The appetite for novelty in some classes of high society is almost insatiable. The latest craze is to be photographed in bed.

Oct 25th 1913: HAYLANDS LIGHTING – The annual subscription for funds for the lighting of the street lamp at the dangerous spot, near The Bank, at Haylands, has been made this year in the village by Mr. BARTON, of Haylands, and the light was first in use this season on Saturday.

Oct 25th 1913: PEOPLE’S OWN – The second anniversary of the People’s Own was celebrated by a conversaxione in the Primitive Methodist Schoolroom on Thursday, when the Rev. J. A. ASHWORTH presided. A favourable report on the work of the movement was given, and a musical programme followed.

Oct 25th 1913: FINE ART SOCIETY – The committee of the I.W. Fine Art Society may be congratulated on the success of their 33rd annual exhibition which was opened at the “Osborne,” the Esplanade, Ryde, on Wednesday. For a number of years the exhibition has been held at the Forester’s Hall, but the committee felt that a more accessible place was required.

Oct 25th 1913: OPERATIC SOCIETY – It was decided that the subscription should now be: vice-presidents, one guinea; honorary members, half a guinea; and ordinary members, half-a-crown. It was decided to perform the “Gondoliers” early in the new year.
