October 1921

Isle of Wight Observer:

Oct 1st 1921:  THE BURLESQUES – The Pier Pavilion has been well catered during the past week, by Mr Powis PINDER’s companies.  The last performance this season will be given by the Ventnor Burlesques, including the Island’s idol, Connie CRIGHTON.

Oct 1st 1921:  THE QUEST – Sir Ernest SHACKLETON’S ship “The Quest” passed Ryde for the second time on Thursday and was plainly visible from the shore by many spectators.  Sir Ernest came on deck and acknowledged the kind wishes.

Oct 1st 1921:  TRINITY CHURCH ROBBED – The police have in hand a robbery at Trinity Church, Ryde, which in every respect surrounded with circumstances of mystery, but which may scarcely require a Sherlock HOLMES to unravel.  The building remained open on Sunday and fortunately the morning collection had been placed in the safe so there was not any great haul for the thieves to make.

Oct 1st 1921:  ROWING CLUB – On Saturday afternoon a good number of interested spectators assembled on the Pier and at the Ryde Rowing Clubs boathouse to witness the four-oared galley race for the Douglas HALL Challenge Cup between Ryde and Newport.  The course was about a mile and a half from Binstead Lodge to the Pier.  Both crews put in a creditable performance, Newport winning by about three quarters of a length or 5 secs ahead.

Oct 1st 1921:  SALE – The value of really good furniture still keeps at a high level judged by the prices realised by Messrs. Wallis Riddett and Co., at their two days sale at Westridge this week.

Oct 8th 1921: PRESENTATION – A pleasing event took place in the large Billiard Room of the Conservative and Unionists Club in Lind Street, on Wednesday evening when a presentation was made to Mr. J. G. DUFFETT, that prince of goodfellows, who after a strenuous business career in High Street, is retiring to his bungalow at Ashey.  The gifts to Mr. DUFFETT consisted of a gold watch and albert, and to Mrs. DUFFETT a turquoise brooch fitted with diamonds.

Oct 8th 1921:  BOATS – The affection shown by holiday makers for particular boats is quite astonishing according to the boatmen.  Albert REEVES says that craft at the Canoe Lake with nice names especially of royalty are always in request.

Oct 8th 1921:  RABBITS – Joseph SAUNDERS, gipsey, of Ryde, was summoned for trespassing on land at Ashey in the occupation of Mr. Leonard BROWN, in search of conies.  Defendant who appeared to have lost his teeth pleaded guilty and Inspector HAWKINS proved a previous conviction for night poaching in 1909.  He was fined 10s. or seven days.  The money was paid.

Oct 15th 1921:  RECREATION GROUND – Considerably more applications from holders of allotments in the Recreation Ground having been received than could be accommodated at Quarry-road, they have given the matter further consideration and recommended that instead of requiring all allotment holders on the Recreation Ground to give up their allotments on the 25th March next, about half the land only be then vacated.

Oct 15th 1921:  CEMETERY LODGE – Alderman PURNELL, chairman of the Cemetery Committee stated they had authorised the Borough Surveyor to execute certain repairs to the Cemetery Lodge, provision for which had been made in the rate estimate, and employing for the purpose the permanent town workmen.

Oct 29th 1921:  RE-POSSESS – Application was made by Mr. H. R. PALMER on behalf of the occupier of Ninham Farm, Binstead, Mr. ELTHAM, for possession of a cottage attached to the farm now occupied by Francis SMITH, an Ex-Service man.  It appeared that defendant had been cowman in Mr. ELTHAM’s employ for two years, and it was the understanding he should give up the cottage when he ceased his employment.  An order for possession was made.
